Somerfield Ventnor IWSomerfield are at last trying to reduce the amount of thin free plastic bags that they are giving away. Instead of being put at the end of the till for people to help themselves they are by the cashier and you have to ask for bags.

This is a directive from Head Office to all stores, probably to try and get people to use their own bags before the tax on plastic bags comes in next year, so they don’t have to bump up the food prices even more to cover the cost of your ‘free plastic bags’.

It is supposed to be implemented in all Somerfield stores but as of Monday 11th August the message had not got through to the Shanklin branch who still had bags for the taking at the end of every checkout.

Garden toolsIW Permaculture

Monthly Meeting

Saturday 7th June
10:30 -12:30ish

Do come along – its free and friendly.

Isle of Wight Permaculture has had monthly meetings in Porchfield, Shorwell, Noke Common & Shanklin in recent months, this Saturday we will be helping Rowan in Ventnor with her weed-filled back garden. It should cheer everybody up to see how bad it is! But there are also lots of good edible and/or useful plants to see, mostly trees and shrubs, so it’s not all grass and bindweed. It is a ‘bring loppers and secateurs’ day, as she wants to clear out some very overgrown Lonicera nitida hedging and get clearing for her veg patch.

You can come along offer encouragement and chat, the work is not compulsory!

If you need the address or directions please contact:

Email: ventnorpermaculture(at)yahoo(dot)co(dot)uk
