I thought I would cheer everyone up by admitting that I can get it wrong too.
Example my carrots, I sowed them in tubs as I did not have their permanent raised bed ready for them. My daughter and I planted them out when I had the bed ready, today I thought I ought to thin them out a bit, this was the result.
It all comes down to lack of care and attention when I planted them out, hopefully by explaining what I did wrong you won’t end up with curly carrots too.
I did not make the holes deep enough or wide enough and as a result the developing carrot root got bent as I put it in the soil. Probably because I was trying to fit too many carrots in the space available and not taking enough time as it was starting to get dark.
Next year it won’t be a problem as I will be sowing directly into the raised bed or a storage box. The same would happen if you transplant any root vegetables if you don’t get the roots straight in the ground.
They still taste really good, even though they are curly.
Oh dear, ours are quite cramped in a deep square container so they may well end up Corkscrew Carrots also!
Well, we planted ours in a raised bed, made sure the soil/sand was dug up and loose beforehand and composted and they still grew curly!! Maybe the roots did bend a bit when planting but not sure. Felt we had dug a hole big enough!
