Great News: Enough money has been raised to send out the resolution to the shareholders.
Ever since Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall launched his ‘Chicken Out’ campaign to provide better welfare for the UK’s chickens back in January he has been trying to meet with Tesco to talk to them about ensuring better conditions for the chickens they sell.
Hugh from River Cottage has bought Tesco shares and tabled a resolution, with the support of 102 other Tesco shareholders, to be debated at Tesco’s annual general meeting, which would force the company either to withdraw its claim that it supports animal welfare or to adopt minimum standards set by the RSPCA.
In response Tesco (who make £5000 profit every minute) have sent out AGM papers to shareholders earlier than usual and now say that if Hugh wants to put this resolution to the 235,000 shareholders he must pay £86,888 for posting it separately to them.
Tesco have given Hugh until Wednesday 11 June to raise the £86,888 needed, he has put in £30,000 of his own money and come up with an auction offering various goodies. Please help if you can, even if it is only bringing this to the attention of other people.
If you don’t want to win any of the auction lots below but would like to donate some money to the fund, Compassion in World Farming have agreed to process donations without any administrative charge.
