The list of seeds to sow in September is getting shorter along with the days.
Radish, chervil, cress, lamb’s lettuce, spinach, peas, land cress, oriental greens, endive, kale (may need protection), spring onions.
If you have a poly-tunnel, unheated greenhouse or cold-frame there is a very good winter lettuce you could try growing called ‘Winter Marvel’ which is available from The Real Seed Catalogue, they show a photo of it in February and it looks really good.
Some green manures can be sown now, I will be doing a separate post about them and the benefits of using them soon.
I am going to plant up 2 or 3 compost sacks with potatoes this month with the hope of having my own new potatoes for later in the year.
If there are any seeds to sow that I have missed out please let me know.
I would not suggest that you sow courgettes now, I have just put this photo on here to show you how bad mine are.
I can’t grow them without mould or mosaic virus either. I did spray them with Bordeaux mixture a couple of times but I don’t think I did it enough and probably should have started spraying them earlier too. Thought it might cheer you up in this wet and windy weather.

Hi Angie, it is very nice hearing about other’s problems, it makes me feel better! Something I still don’t grasp. I am at the end of my succesful harvest of chards, and not very succesful lettuce and sweet peas. Is September now time to throw every thing away, cover with new compost layes and start growing, or shall i just remove the weeds and add a bit of compost here and there and slowly start sowing? I have two lifted beds, but the soil keeps going down, so my husband just bought lots of new soil to top up. However, I am convinced my soil is good enough, because of previous rotation. So not sure what to do, do I have to restart every autumn or not? Thanks Nicoletta
I usually add a layer of home made compost to two of my 4 raised beds every spring before I start sowing or planting in them, I don’t produce enough for all of them, the other two beds get the spent compost from the pots and tubs to raise the soil level up.
